Alright, someone else who rose to fame via instagram did something idiotic. Actress and Comedian, JessHilarious "Jess with the Mess", while boarding a plane, recorded a video of her reaction to brown skinned people with turbans on their heads which was a "gasp". After it was out on the social-sphere, the commentators called her out.
Eventually, she doubled down an insited that her paranoia and xenophobic behavior was justified because the 4 individuals were not on the plane after evacuation. Jesshilarious may have flipped the bird at the phone at elast 4 times while doing so. She said she was scared and that she doesnt have to think like "all black people" or "have the same religion". The instablogs were ablaze with outrage almost immediately. The outrage is definitely appropriate.
A few hours after this took place, the comedian did an iOs press conference for her IGTV. Jesshilarious wrote a statement apologizing for her zenophobic behavior. "Jess with the Mess" somehow attributed this to ignorance and not understanding the power she has. She explained that she is "Growing in this sh*t.
Jesshilarious is an instagram star. She has not had the same grooming as traditional comedians have. I was not shocked at her behavior because there are many people who may think like she did in the moment. Its pure ignorance operating at full capacity. Jesshilarious does not have the upbringing that would permit her to know the difference from a Sikh and a Muslim person. I would argue that this week is when Jesshilarious truly learned what "xenophobia" means. Her ignorance played into that hateful consensus among all xenophobes. Jesshilarious saw him and saw every SNL skit that was done about Osama Bin Laden. And that’s her extent of exposure to people who are from the Middle East. She saw skin and a turban and put it together with her limited knowledge.
Jesshilarious handled the aftermath well enough. However, she cannot blame anything on not-knowing anymore. She has to realize that her "barbershop" style of comedy needs a little fine tuning for the stages shes is walking into. She’s an IG comedian and we should set the bar low for all of the Social Media stars anyways....any one actually
I have said it many times on this blog. The people on social media are still people. They are learing this fame thing as they go. We cannot expect them to know better because they simply do not have the capacity. As we participate in social media, it is more likely that correction comes harsh and with a sharp tongue. When ignorance creeps from the lips of these fools, let them know and truly consider unfollowing them.
