On this Lovely Friday, three young women; Cardi B, Kali Uchis, and Alina Baraz , released highly anticipated albums. Although all of these albums are sooo damn good. Seriously.
But I am not here to talk about Kali Uchis or Alina Baraz's new albums.
There is no doubt that Summer 2017 belonged to Cardi B, triple platinum hit, Bodak Yellow was on the lips of men and women everywhere. Although I knew the song back to back months before y'all even knew about it. ;-) Cardi B's lyrics that rang truth to hard working women with lines like "dropped 2 mixtapes in 6 months/What bitch working hard as me?" Cardi B solidified her position with a feminism that looked nothing like the elite liberal and gentrifying voices we typically see. Cardi B's feminism is raw and backed up with real life experience and not theories.
Cardi B has been the subject of much criticism, deniying her credibility with comments like "Not Black enough", getting by only because she's light skinned, just a stripper, palateable for white audiences seems like twitter's favorite past time.. Although some of these claims were supported by solid facts and heartfelt opinion, I refuse to support descrediting any hard working, marginalized woman.
It 2018. Cut that shit out.
Invasion of Prvacy silenced all discreditors and 'set the record straight cause bitches love to assume'. Cardi B gave us hoe anthems, breakup anthems, twerk anthems, love anthems, stuntin' anthems and so much more. This album did not disappoint at all.
On Saturday, Ms. Almanzar hit us again with a wonderful pregnancy announcement on Saturday Night Live while performing the first single, 'Be Careful' from Invasion of Privacy.
