10 Foods That Are Surprisingly Not Vegan-Friendly

I have been vegan for a grand total of 5 days now. Learning to eat in this way is so different from when I decided to become a pescatarian in high school. *Before vegan-restaurant tours were even a thing* I have encountered so many things that have to be eliminated from my diet. Here are some thing that caught me by surpise :
1. Butter
I completely forgot about butter. Its made with MILK. Although most breads are vegan friendly, their godly-ordained companion is not. As I grow as a vegan I have to take the punches as they come. I did not expect butter to be my first upper cut.

2. Challah
If you have not experienced such a loaf, please stop by your closesT Kosher bakery for a taste. Challah is soft, fluffy, and creamy. Its is a Jewish bread thats typicallly eaten during Jewish holidays and celebrations. But you can get it throughout the year. It is an egg-based bread so its a no go for the vegans.

3. Preserves/ Jelly
I know!! Its just fruit in a jar right? Wrong. Preserves (unless made at home) are typically made with pectin. Pectin is actually made with pig hooves. Jelly is the next best thing to put on bread but they are not vegan-friendly.

4. Beer
There is more than yeast in that can, it may alaso contain eggs or milk to aid in "frothiness". Gelatin, which is made of pork, is also often included as clarifying agents.

5. Condiments
Honey Mustard, barbeque sauce and even ketchup, the list goes on. They contain pectin. Judt like preserves, pectin is made with pig feet. If you must dip your food, try something different, like vinegear or oil.

6. Veggie Burgers They are often made with eggs or dairy to hold them together. As a vegetarian, Burger King was my go-to when I wanted to enjoy fast food like a true American. However, any burger that a vegan eats must be plant-based. Just think Impossible Butgers or Beyond The Meat patties.

7. Honey
Honey is made by Bees. They are animals. I made the mistake of asking for honey with my pancakes at a vegan restaurant. I realized the severity of my actions when the waitress gave me a death stare. I was happy to ask for the agave. It has a cleaner taste the honey and is made from the same plant that gives the world tequila.

8. Marshmallows
These things are made of nothing but sugar and....gelatin. The pig strikes again!

9. Cookies
I completely forgot that cookies are made with eggs butter, and white sugar. I love cookies. They are my weakness. There is something about a cookie that is crunchy on the outside and soft and wam on the inside that just warms my heart. As veganism continues to grow, vegan cookies are very accessible. Cookies are not vegan friendly.

10. Vegtable Soup
If not listed as vegetarian, it is safe to assume that vegetable soup and most soups are made with chicken broth. Most soups that are in cans or served in restaurants contain a meat by-product in them for "flavoring."

There are so many vegan friendly foods. Although these 10 foods are no longer a part of my diet, they will eventually be replaced with different options. My purpose is to improve my health, clear my skin, and look good while doing so.
